Ross was direct about where the burden now sits on EU T+1 readiness. “No one can be ready in isolation,” she told delegates. “Each firm must, of course, assess its own readiness, but that alone is not enough.” Firms, she said, need to check the readiness of their entire ecosystem — clients, brokers, custodians, CSDs, trading venues, CCPs, vendors and outsource providers — because “readiness has to be tested up and down the trading and settlement chain, and one weak link can create pressure throughout that chain.”

The EU’s capital market is fragmented, but the solution isn’t to completely change it. Lidia Kurt, CEO of Börse Stuttgart’s Seturion will share her unique take on tokenisation at the upcoming PostTrade 360° conference. Join her in the session titled “Today’s state of trading and issuance with digital assets” on 3 September.
“We at Seturion believe that trading itself doesn’t need to change. The many trading venues across Europe can retain their existing infrastructure and licences. What’s needed is a true pan-European post-trade layer to address the fragmentation of Europe’s capital markets and make issuance and settlement infrastructure more efficient. Technology can overcome this fragmentation by connecting all these trading venues to a unified settlement infrastructure,” says Kurt.

Europese banken kunnen honderden miljarden euro’s extra investeren in Europese bedrijven, als regelgeving en toezicht beter aansluiten op het versterken van concurrentiekracht en groei. Dat blijkt uit een studie over de concurrentiekracht van Europese banken door consultancybureau Oliver Wyman, opgesteld in opdracht van de Europese Bankenfederatie. Het rapport laat ook zien dat de extra jaarlijkse investeringsbehoefte in Europa momenteel rond de €1,4 biljoen bedraagt.

FASTER and GDPR: Are We Creating Unnecessary Data Risks in the Pursuit of Tax Relief Efficiency?

The EU’s FASTER Directive aims to simplify and accelerate withholding tax relief procedures across Europe. While these objectives are broadly supported by the financial industry, the final legislative text raises important questions regarding its compatibility with GDPR principles.

Our latest paper examines whether the Directive’s extensive investor-level reporting obligations, including the transmission of sensitive personal data through the full chain of financial intermediaries, meet the requirements of data minimisation, necessity and proportionality under EU data protection law. It also explores how the final Directive differs from the original proposal reviewed by the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) and what this means for legal certainty and implementation.

The paper calls on the European Commission to revisit these issues in the context of the Tax Omnibus initiative and encourages Member States to make implementation choices that minimise privacy risks while preserving the objectives of FASTER.

We welcome the discussion with policymakers, tax authorities, market infrastructures and financial institutions on how to strike the right balance between tax transparency, operational efficiency and fundamental data protection rights.
